BC Cancer provides a comprehensive cancer control program for the people of British Columbia in partnership with regional health authorities to deliver a range of cancer services, which include prevention, screening and early detection, diagnosis and treatment, research, education, supportive care, rehabilitation and palliative care. It operates six regional cancer centers in Surrey, Kelowna, Vancouver, Victoria, Abbotsford and Prince George, along with two research centers that conduct research into the causes and cures for cancer. 

The focus of this role is developing and documenting a set of user facing reports for the Cancer Screening Programs Application and Hereditary Cancer Program Application. The intern BA will utilize variety of query tools to perform data retrieval, data manipulation and analysis for research, reporting and data quality improvement. Hands on experience with MS SQL and MS PowerBI is a must. Knowledge of R Studio, Python would be an asset. 

The student utilizes a variety of computerized database and query tools to perform data retrieval from databases and perform analysis for operational reporting, quality improvement activities, in the Screening Programs. The student prepares datasets suitable for the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced analytics, participates in assessing the efficiency of the.

Co-op Student, Business Intelligence and Analytics assists the BI-Specialist in developing and documenting a set of standard users facing reports for the Screening Programs Application - Cascade. This medical informatics solution aims to improve management of the patient pathway and facilitate patient communication related to population-based Cancer Screening in British Columbia.

The Cascade eHealth application is built on the Microsoft Dynamics platform and utilizes standard MS SQL server reporting suit for internal reporting. The student to utilize MS Power BI visualization tool to develop reports of Cancer Screening Outcomes and Key Performance Indicators to the MOH, PHSA Board, BC cancer and department leadership.

What you'll do

• Develop standard operational reports, data quality checks and generates reports as requested.
• Elicit requirements, confirms requirements with stakeholders and analysts.
• Develops and maintains operational related documentation, data dictionaries and processes to support Screening Program reports delivery.
• Collaborates with end users, participates in user acceptance testing, and provides end users with orientation on how to use reports efficiently.
• Extract and manipulate data to prepare datasets to support applications of Advanced analytics.
• Support analytical activities by performing statistical analysis of the Cancer Screening programs operational and clinical outcomes.
• Performs other related duties as assigned

What you bring

Qualifications:

• Second plus year student in an accredited Undergraduate Program with a major/minor in Computer Science, Business, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics or Management of Information Systems.
• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within healthcare settings. This involves recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within BC Cancer contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, BC Human Rights Code, Anti-racism Data Act and how they intersect across the health care system.

Core Competencies:

• Brings an understanding of the Indigenous specific racism and the broader systemic racism that exists in the colonial health care structure and has demonstrated initiatives in breaking down barriers and ensuring a safe environment ensuring a sense of belonging to all and informed by Indigenous Cultural Safety.
• Awareness of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (the Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).

You have:

• Demonstrated ability to perform complex data capture, management, retrieval and analysis using relational database management systems.
• Demonstrated ability to operate Windows based software packages including MS SQL query software, database applications, and statistical analysis software.
• Knowledge of the MS SQL is a must, knowledge of Power BI and SSRS reporting package is an asset.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with all levels of staff.
• Demonstrates a commitment to beginning and/or continuing their personal learning journey related to Indigenous-specific racism and dismantling systems of oppression, as well as addressing racism more broadly. Shows willingness to articulate and share their learning experiences to contribute to a culture of motivation and inspiration among peers.
• Demonstrates foundational knowledge of the social, economic, and political realities of settler-colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups within social and health contexts. Understands the impact of social determinants of health-on-health outcomes. Shows a commitment to learning about and upholding legislative obligations and provincial commitments outlined in foundational documents such as the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan, Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, the BC Human Rights Code, Anti-Racism Data Act, and the Distinctions Based Approach.

Hourly Wage: Starting wage for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan.
