In this specialized leadership role, you will combine your expertise in health information management, clinical coding, auditing, education, and data analytics to support patient care, hospital funding, research, healthcare planning, and provincial reporting.

What You'll Do

As the Data Quality Lead, you will serve as a subject matter expert and resource for Health Information Management professionals, clinicians, physicians, and organizational stakeholders.

Your responsibilities will include:

Data Quality & Clinical Coding Leadership

• Lead data quality initiatives for Discharge Abstract Database (DAD), National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS), Oncology, Trauma, and Mental Health reporting.
• Perform coding, abstracting, auditing, and validation activities in accordance with CIHI, Cancer Care Ontario, WHO, and organizational standards.
• Monitor evolving classification systems, coding standards, and reporting requirements and assess their impact on departmental practices.
• Identify trends and opportunities for improvement through detailed data analysis and quality assurance reviews.

Education & Knowledge Sharing

• Provide orientation, education, and ongoing training to Health Information Management professionals.
• Develop and deliver educational sessions related to coding standards, data quality, documentation requirements, and abstracting practices.
• Support physicians, clinical staff, and HIM practicum students through training and consultation.
• Facilitate meetings and discussions to address coding questions, best practices, and quality concerns.

Auditing & Analytics

• Design and conduct comprehensive quality assurance audits.
• Analyze and interpret data from Med2020 Winrecs, Oncology systems, Quadramed PCS, OPIS, ARIA, and other clinical systems.
• Produce reports and data insights that support operational decision-making, funding, research, and performance improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with analysts and operational leaders to ensure data accuracy and consistency across reporting systems.

System & Process Improvement

• Support testing, validation, and implementation of software updates and enhancements.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of policies, procedures, standards, and reference materials.
• Drive standardization of data definitions and work processes across sites and programs.
• Support timely and accurate submissions to CIHI, Ontario Health, and other provincial reporting bodies.

What You Bring

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an approved Health Information Management program.
• Active certification and membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).
• Minimum three (3) years of coding experience involving DAD, NACRS, and Oncology reporting within an acute care environment.
• Strong knowledge of:
  • ICD-10-CA
  • Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI)
  • AJCC staging classifications
  • CIHI standards and reporting requirements
  • Ontario Health and Cancer Care Ontario coding and abstracting guidelines
• Experience with Med2020 Winrecs, Oncology, Treat and Collector abstracting systems.
• Knowledge of Case Mix Groups (CMGs), Resource Intensity Weights (RIWs), complexity measures, and healthcare reporting methodologies.
• Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience with Crystal Reports, data analysis, reporting, and database concepts.

Additional Qualifications

• Strong understanding of health information legislation, including:
  • Public Hospitals Act
  • Mental Health Act
  • Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Proven ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, clinical teams, and operational leaders.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
• Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
