eHealth role summary

Role is for an Interface Developer on a Hospital Information System implementation (Project REACH) building and supporting HL7/FHIR integrations using Rhapsody and other healthcare integration technologies—directly working on health IT interoperability and clinical system interfaces.

About this role

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is undertaking Project REACH, a multi-year initiative to implement Oracle Health’s Hospital Information System (HIS). This is a hybrid role (3 days onsite, 2 days remote).

Position Summary

The Interface Developer will be a key member of the Project REACH HIS Implementation integration team, supporting the organization’s enterprise interface environment. This role collaborates with internal stakeholders, ancillary system administrators, and external vendors to design, build, implement, and support HL7-based integrations.

As an Interface Developer, you will play a critical role in building the integrations that connect clinical, operational, and enterprise systems. Your work will directly support better patient care, improve clinician workflows, and ensure the reliable movement of healthcare data across the organization.

The position involves full lifecycle interface development, including requirements analysis, specification design, configuration, testing, implementation, and ongoing production support. The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining and enhancing corporate interface standards and ensuring reliable system interoperability.


Key Responsibilities

Interface Development & Implementation

  • Analyze, define, design, and develop HL7 interface solutions
  • Review HL7 specifications and vendor documentation and provide recommendations
  • Create detailed interface specifications and mapping documentation
  • Design, build, configure, and maintain interfaces using the interface engine ( Rhapsody)
  • Ensure alignment with organizational architecture, standards, and integration frameworks

Testing & Deployment

  • Develop and execute unit and integration test plans
  • Lead testing activities and validate interface functionality
  • Coordinate and support production promotion activities
  • Document test results and obtain required sign-offs

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Work closely with business owners, ancillary system administrators, and vendors
  • Provide technical consultation and clarify integration requirements
  • Support issue resolution during implementation phases
  • Communicate project status and deliverables using project management tools

Production Support & Operations

  • Monitor interface engine and ensure system reliability and performance
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, including message errors and system failures
  • Provide support for interface-related incidents and user inquiries
  • Liaise with vendors for issue resolution and system enhancements

System Maintenance & Governance

  • Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain interface engine platforms
  • Develop and maintain production support protocols and documentation
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, standards, and processes
  • Recommend and implement continuous improvements to interface processes

Qualifications & Skills

Technical Expertise

  • Strong knowledge of HL7 v2.x standards with healthcare integration experience
  • Hands-on experience with interface engines (Rhapsody REQUIRED)
  • Experience in interface specification development and documentation
  • Proficiency in:
    • Rhapsody Integration Engine
  • HL7 v2.x
  • FHIR APIs
  • SQL Server (SSIS &PLSQL)
  • JavaScript
  • Windows Server
  • REST APIs
  • XML / JSON
  • Healthcare clinical systems
    • Project and change management tools
  • Experience with at least one application development language

Professional Experience

  • 3–5+ years of experience in IT or interface development (healthcare preferred)
  • Experience managing multiple projects and operational tasks concurrently
