Supervisor for Biomedical Engineering manages and maintains medical devices and evaluates new medical technologies—a health technology role supporting clinical operations (clinical engineering/medical device lifecycle).

About this role

Sinai Health is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Supervisor, Biomedical Engineering to provide day-to-day operational leadership and technical oversight. Reporting to a Clinical Engineering Program Lead, the Supervisor ensures the safe, efficient, and effective delivery of technical services across the organization. This role serves as the primary operational leader for the Biomedical Engineering Technologists, coordinating daily activities, prioritizing service delivery, supporting complex technical issues, promoting regulatory compliance, and fostering staff development. The Supervisor plays a critical role in ensuring medical equipment is maintained in a safe and reliable condition to support patient care while driving operational excellence, continuous improvement, and a culture of safety.


In this role you will:

  • Coordinate and supervise the day-to-day activities of Biomedical Engineering Technologists
  • Assign, prioritize, and monitor service requests, preventive maintenance activities, incoming inspections, and equipment deployments
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for complex medical equipment repairs and technical issues
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentorship to Biomedical Engineering Technologists and Support Specialists
  • Ensure departmental activities comply with applicable standards, regulations, and organizational policies, including CSA, Health Canada, Accreditation Canada, AAMI, ISO, and hospital requirements
  • Identify training and professional development needs and support staff growth
  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and employee development activities
  • Identify and address workplace hazards, including equipment, tools, storage practices, carts, lifting activities, and Biomed shop organization
  • Assist in managing operational expenditures related to parts, repairs, service contracts, and vendor support
  • Monitor department work queues and key performance indicators to ensure timely completion of work
  • Assist with evaluations of new medical technologies and provide recommendations regarding serviceability, reliability, maintainability, and compliance
  • Identify opportunities to improve service delivery, operational efficiency, and equipment reliability
  • Provide day-to-day supervision, coaching, and mentorship to Biomedical Engineering Technologists and Support Specialists
  • Participate in and manage on-call rotations
  • Write, review and update policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required
